Waltzing Matilda
Illness is not only a complication of life, but also an opportunity to embark on a journey of healing in a broader sense.
In a story inspired by real events, the introverted Karel (Karel Roden) lives in a world of order and strict rules, leaving little room for empathy. Although he has a strained relationship with his extroverted and bohemian mother Matylda (Regina Rázlová), a former bar singer, he visits her mostly out of a sense of obligation. However, when Matylda unexpectedly loses her apartment, Karel has no choice but to let her move in with him.
At first, their coexistence proves disastrous, especially when it becomes clear that Matylda is developing Alzheimer’s disease. Meanwhile, Karel’s son Pavel (Antonio Šoposki), an irresponsible flutist who openly despises his father’s profession as an executor, emerges as the most viable option to take care of his troubled grandmother. As the three generations with their vastly different temperaments come together under one roof, their interactions initially bring about humorous moments.
Nevertheless, as Matylda’s symptoms progress, these moments take on a more tragicomic tone. Gradually, the seemingly hopeless situation turns their lives upside down, challenging them in ways they never anticipated. Yet, through persistence and a refusal to give up, they ultimately find meaning—not just for Matylda, but also for themselves.
